"Potential bad rap for R/C aircraft"
03-15-03, 20:42z

Greetings:

This is slightly off topic, but I thought folks should be aware.

Soon after 9/11, there were calls from some journalists other inflammatory stories being written at the time to ban FS. FS. FS. Being an "authority" on FS2K, I was approached by NBC to comment on allegations that because a copy of Flight Simulator 2000 was found at the apartment of one of the terrorists. The short story is my comments were twisted to fit their view of the world. While I was saying that FS could not be used as the sole method to learn how to fly aircraft into buildings and even though I refused to fly FS2K into the WTC for their cameras, they found some other yutz that would--and subsequently ran that footage over my comments. The end result was viewers getting the impression that object of FS2K was to fly into buildings! (I know this because I was approach by several people who saw me on TV and saying exactly that.)

Anyway, today I received word that there have been allegations that R/C aircraft may be used as the next "vehicle" for terrorists. In an attempt to help sanity prevail, please have a look at the statement made by Jay Mealy, Programs Director of the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) at http://modelaircraft.org/templates/ama/

While I suppose a hobbiest R/C aircraft that you purchase at a hobby store could conceivably be used as a terrorist vehicle (and a poor one at that), I urge those of us that are familiar with R/C aircraft help separate the facts from fiction about our hobby to help the public temper what they may hear in the media in the weeks to come. We don't need sensationalistic "journalists" looking for shock value to do to R/C what they did to FS for no good reason other than to create headlines.

Ben
