"VPC Flight Rally #11"
11-22-02, 23:36z

The Staff and Crew would like to invite you all to the forthcoming VPC Flight Rally #11. This
flight will take place on Sunday 15th December 2002 arriving at the destination airport for 20:00
BST and then into the Pilot Lounge for the usual chat and the virtual burger and beer afterwards :-)

This months destination is to Aspen-Pitkin Co/Sardy (KASE) Colerado.

Listed below is a cut down version of data available to you for this flight.

Altitude - 7818 ft
Mag Variation - -12.1 deg

ATIS - 120.40 Mhz
CTAF - 118.85 Mhz
Tower - 118.85 Mhz
Approach - 123.80 Mhz
Ground - 121.90 Mhz
Rwy 15
Approach Course 148 deg
Length 7006 ft x 100 ft Wide
Rwy 33
Approach Course 328 deg
Length 7006 ft x 100 ft Wide

I haven't checked but Rwy 15 May have an ILS IPKN 108.50 Mhz @ 27 nm please check. My FSNav shows
this a grid square below Rwy 33?!

Aspen as most of you may know is the long standing December Rally Destination :-) Lots of snow and
ice around so bring your ski's along :-) Also watch your approach as it's apparently not as easy as
it looks :-)

Remember folks, fly safe and have an enjoyable flight.

NB.

Please look up this airport and scenery for your particular version of Flight Simulator, Fly etc.
Anyone wishing to can fly online with me as I fly online from departure to destination, just look me
up in the Flight Terminal.

Regards,

James (CONman) Anderson

Hello James,
Strange airport, the data available in FS2002 seams incorrect, if you follow the ILS to land on runway 15 you are in the hill,; the airport is 1 mile left
I will try again

Hi Emile,

Sorry for the delay but been on holiday.

As I mentioned in my initial post the ILS -IS- not lined up with the runway! Don't know why!!!

The airport was/is the traditional location for Christmas within FSFORUM and GAMERS <s> so thought I'd carry it on :-)

Welcome home, James:

> As I mentioned in my initial post the ILS -IS- not lined up with the

It's usually due to terrain or other obstacle clearances. Actually, many ILS's are not exactly in-line with the runway. Some are offset when there are parallel runways with ILS's as well. Of course, those with large offsets won't do CATIII approaches. :)

Hi Ben,

Good to be home (for now) :-) Understand the offset's but if you look at the Runway and ILS Approach within FSNav it's wayyyyyyyyyy offfffffffff <BG>

Greetings Emile and Andy:

I downloaded the IAP for KASE last night off the AOPA site and don't see an ILS there.

> I agree with Emile re KASE ILS 108.5.

It looks like the localizer on 108.5 is for PKN, not ASE. I suppose that would explain why you're having problems! :)

> Tried it and it passed me right
> over the FS Nav and the GPS but some 3 miles to the SE of KASE runway.
> Glide slope did not come active so I stayed WAY up there. :)

Ah, this may help: An ILS consists of a LOCALIZER (horizontal guidance), glideslope (vertical guidance), and marker beacons (provides distance waypoints along the localizer). Therefore, a localizer itself will NOT have a glideslope.

HTH!

Ben

Greetings guys!

Sorry I had to cut out early yesterday, but I was able to make it to ASE albeit earlier than the scheduled Rally time. I was using real weather, and was wondering if anyone noticed the severe windshear on approach to ASE? I think it may have to do with a quirk in FS's weather system and the high elevation of ASE (the winds aloft forecast and actual METAR from ASE causes the radical change in conditions).

Merry, Merry!

Ben -

I came in about 1/2 hour after you also using real weather and had no problems with wind shear.

Hi Ben,

I was getting wind shear at 13500 prior to Finals fluctuating between 9 and 35kts?! Once below 9000 it settled!

Greetings James:

What I experienced was a strong crosswind on the VOR approach, then an abrupt change in wind direction somewhere around 2000-2500' above the airfield. That's weird that we all experienced different things.

Hi Ben,

I was about 45nm out from the VOR and dropped from 13500 to 11700 when I noticed the radical fluctuation in speeds and directions. All changed again from the VOR till touch down at different altitudes, weird or what <s>

Hi, it's been a while since my last post - have been
working two jobs and also having a problem understanding
what I need to do to get the flight rooms to work.

I flew into Aspen yesterday (a little late, I know) and
used the flip chart booklet, U.S.Terminal Procedures,
Southwest, vol 1 of 2. The approach to rwy 15 starts at
Red Table VOR (DBL) at 14,000', then fly 164 deg.
altitudes are 12,700 at 3 nm from DBL, 12,200 at 6 nm,
10,400 at 9.5 nm then you're only 2-3 mi out.

There is no mention of a published approach for Rwy 33
although if you approach the localizer on 300 deg and turn to 330 over the station, you will be lined up about 13 mi out and have to pass between two hills on short final (you're on your own).
The minimum safe altitude from that direction is
15,500 at 25 mn.

I flew a Lockheed Constellation and came in too high.
There was a conflict with the AI traffic taking off in
the opposite direction so I went for the grass <g> and
made it in ok.

Holiday Greetings

Alan

There's really nothing unusual there. There's nothing to break, so if you just play around with it a bit I'm sure you'll get it. Nevertheless, here are some basic instructions.

To join a Flight:
1. Enter the Flight Terminal
2. Click the Flight # button of the flight you wish to join.
3. Once you're logged into the room of your choice, click the Fly Now! button. That'll autolaunch your flight and your flight sim and will join the session in progress.

To Host a Flight:
1. Enter the Flight Terminal
2. Click the Flight # button of the flight you wish to host.
3. Once you're logged into the room of your choice, click the Fly Now! button. That'll autolaunch your flight and your flight sim and set you as host.

Let us know if you have any problems or questions.

That sounds right.

For those following along at home, here's the plate:

http://edj.net/cgi-bin/echoplate.pl?SouthWest/ASE_vd_gC.GIF

> There is no mention of a published approach for Rwy 33

Actually the approach is a circle to land approach and no specific runway is listed in the approach title, so either runway can be used (e.g. there's no specific runway requirement).

> although if you approach the localizer on 300 deg and turn to 330 over

The localizer is for the missed approach, so if you use that "arrival", as you say, "you're on your own". :)

> I flew a Lockheed Constellation and came in too high.

Easy to do. From the plate it lists 9.67 degrees as the descent angle!

> There was a conflict with the AI traffic taking off in
> the opposite direction so I went for the grass <g> and

Any landing you can walk away from... :)

Merry Merry!

G,day James, hope you had a good holiday, sounds ominous tho', do you have to work over Xmas ?
I agree with Emile re KASE ILS 108.5. Tried it and it passed me right over the FS Nav and the GPS but some 3 miles to the SE of KASE runway. Glide slope did not come active so I stayed WAY up there. :)
See you in Aspen.
