"Headset"

Although I've given up real flying I have still got my headset with mike.

Does anybody have experience with using these on a PC? I'm thinking of trying out "Game Commander" with FS2002 and it would be quite nice to use the real thing round my ears.

Greetings Maurice:

The thought has crossed my mind over the years, but I never got around to doing that (I don't wear my helmet when driving racing sims either, but that's my hangup.) :)

I have a headphone to headset impedance converter from Sporty's (adapts headphones to be used on headset/intercom connections) that I use for making in flight recordings, so I wonder if such a conversion is necessary for doing what you're proposing.

Here's an article from FlightSim.com that may be of some interest (although it seems rather "schlocked" together). http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds?$=main/howto/adapt.htm

Hope this helps!

Ben

Hello Ben,

The Web page you mentioned described a bit of a bodge (I presume that "schlocked" means the same thing<g>) which I didn't fully understand anyway. But on that page there is a link:

http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds?$=main/howto/adapter.htm

to a page where the author details the issues involved in properly connecting a real headset to the PCs soundcard. That's worthy of study and I'll follow that up.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Maurice

Hi Maurice

I don't have a real world headset but I did buy Game Commander back in March 2000. The supplied headset was pretty naff so I also bought a Plantronics headset with mike.

It all worked very well but I found it a 5 minute wonder and with the inclusion of ATC in FS2002 I no longer use the software. Perhaps I should dig it out and give it another go :-) The headset is useful though to allow late night flying without disturbing 'er indoors ;-).

Best regards

Hello Frank,

See my reply to Ben.

What raised my interest in Flight Commander speech recognition was a rcommendation by somebody that that program was, in his opinion, the best add-on that he's bought for FS. So it's intersting to read your comments.

So I think maybe I'll let some more water flow under the bridge before getting a copy of GC<G>. But I'll persue the matching of my headset to my PC card out of interest.

Regards,

M.

Hi Maurice

I haven't kept track of prices but Game Commander (Are we talking about the same prog?) cannot be very expensive now. If you can get your headset going with FS then I think you would find it worth a try. It is certainly an impressive bit of software.

The only problem I ever had with it was the word 'Pause'. After some time I realised that to its American ears what I was saying was unrecognisable. I started to say 'Parse' and it recognised the word everytime :-)

Happy landings
Frank
